đż Freedom to Grow: What Juneteenth Teaches Us About Gardening
Published June 20, 2025 | By Roots OMG
“Every seed holds the hope of freedomâfreedom to break through, to reach toward the light, and to become what it was created to be.”
Juneteenth marks the true celebration of freedom in the United Statesâthe day when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their liberation, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Itâs a moment of history that still speaks loudly today.
And in the garden, it echoes.
đ± Gardening Is an Act of Faith
When I sow seeds into the soil, Iâm reminded that growth doesnât happen overnight.
It doesnât rush.
It doesnât skip the hard stuff.
It needs warmth, time, and often… a struggle to push through the surface.
Juneteenth reminds us that freedom, like growth, takes time to root.
Sometimes the soil has been compacted by years of pain.
Sometimes weedsâlike injustice and apathyâhave to be pulled over and over again.
And sometimes, we must be the gardeners who water someone else’s dream until it blooms.
đș Planting Red Dahlias for Remembrance

This year, I planted red dahlias in my gardenâlayered, bold, and unapologetically radiant.
Red is a powerful color in the Juneteenth celebration.
It symbolizes the strength, resilience, and deep sacrifice of those who came before us.
Dahlias, in particular, speak to inner strength, grace, and a blooming identityâperfect for this moment.
If you plant something red todayâbe it flowers, fruit, or even a painted stoneâlet it be an invitation to remember and reflect.
âPlanted in honor of freedom. Still growing. Still rising.â
đż Lessons from the Dirt
Gardening and justice have more in common than you think:
- Both require showing up daily, even when progress is invisible.
- Both demand careâespecially for whatâs been overlooked.
- Both celebrate whatâs been buried but refuses to stay hidden.
âThey will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.â
âIsaiah 61:3
đ» Freedom to Grow Starts with You
As you tend your garden this week, ask yourself:
- What areas of my life need more space to grow freely?
- Where am I still waiting for permission to bloom?
- Who around me might need a little help breaking through the soil?
Growth is personal. Freedom is communal.
And both are worth celebrating.
Happy Juneteenth, from my garden to yours.
With growth,
Eileen
